Video Tidbit: Making Patches

Objective: Create a custom fabric patch.

Video Notes:

1. Create word for patch.

   1. Insert> Text> Shape> type the desired word> Select desired font> Create.
   2. Do not resize the shape at this time or it can alter the steps needed for this technique. The patch can be resized after completion.
   3. With the word shape selected> right click> Copy> right click> Paste.
   4. Move each element so both are visible on the page.

2. Create patch stitches.

   1. From the Elements panel, select the first word shape> Quick Access Toolbar (QAT)> Fill drop-down arrow> Make Transparent> Stroke width drop-down arrow> 2 pt.
   2. Stroke type drop-down arrow> Simple> select a dashed line.
   3. Stroke color drop-down arrow> Solid Color> selected desired color of the patch stiches> OK.

3. Create patch fabric.

   1. From the Elements Panel, select the second word shape> QAT> Stroke width drop-arrow down> select 1/2”> Stroke color drop-down arrow> Solid Color> selected desired color for the patch fabric> OK.
   2. Note, if there are any empty areas withing the inside of the black outline, increase the stroke size until the entire element is covered by the black stroke.
   3. With the Shape still selected, right click> Stroke> Format> Line joints drop-down arrow> select Round> OK.
   4. With the Shape still selected, right click> Flatten> Insert> Other> Outliner> move the new shape off to the side.
   5. From the Elements panel select the colored shape> Filter> Filters> Surface> Texture> Texture sample drop-down arrow> Small Burlap> OK> Scaling 3> Amplification 0> OK.
   6. With the shape still selected, go to Photo> Frames> Customize> Add an effect> Insert an inside shadow> Depth 0> Softness 10> Expansion 25> Density 100> Color drop-down arrow> click on the black color> OK.

4. Create Patch binding.

   1. From the Elements panel, select the gray shape that was previously created> QAT> Stroke width drop-down arrow> select 1/8”.
   2. Stroke color drop-down arrow> Solid Color> selected the same color as the patch material> HSB> lower the brightness slider to make the color appear a darker> OK.
   3. With the element still selected, go to Photo> Frames> Customize> Add an effect> Insert a 3D Edge bevel> Amount 100> Softness 90> Width 20> OK.

5. Assemble the layers of the patch.

   1. In the Elements panel, drag each element up or down the panel so that the shapes are in the following order: (1) Stitch shape; (2) fabric (colored) shape; and 3 border (gray) shape.
   2. With the CTRL key selected, click on the stitch shape> click on the fabric shape> click on the border shape> QAT> Align horizontal icon> Align vertical icon.
   3. Make any adjustments to the stitching, inside shadow or colors until your patch is as desired. If you decide to change the color of the patch fabric shape, the texture and effect will need to be reapplied.

6. Adding paper or embellishment that the patch will appear to be sewn on to the page.

   1. From the Content Panel, add desired paper or embellishment to the page. Resize as desired and move the Element below the patch shapes.
   2. From the Elements panel, select the gray shape with the colored outline, go to Format> Shadows> Glow> Softness 15> Expansion 10> Color drop-down arrow> Sample> Select a dark color from the paper or embellishment> Density 60> OK.

7. Complete your page with photos, papers, embellishments, journaling, and a title.

   1. Tip: Search in Content Manager for denim or pocket to see if you have any embellishments that might work well for this Video Tidbit.
