Unraveling My Ancestry: A Journey of Discovery
By Gloria O'Donnell • November 4, 2024
My story begins in Norway before 1800, rooted in the lives of my ancestors, particularly my great-grandmother, Ingebjorg Rikardsdatter. A pivotal emigration document dated September 1886 revealed her name and sparked my quest to find her grave, as well as her husband’s, whose resting place differs from what his death certificate states.
The mystery deepened with my mother’s paternal grandmother, who died on January 26, 1907, in Donalda, Alberta, but appears to be buried in Minnesota. How did her body make that journey? This question drives my research further into my family’s history.
My focus has been on the pioneer women in my mother’s family. While my dad’s lineage was well-documented, it was the heartbreaking stories of these women that captivated me—stories of resilience and sacrifice that shaped their families.
As I near the completion of my research, I feel a strong need to preserve and share their legacies. I envision a collection that intertwines historical facts with personal reflections, honoring the remarkable women who paved the way for future generations. This journey has taught me the importance of understanding our roots and sharing the stories of those who came before us. Through my work, I hope to keep their memories alive and celebrate their enduring impact.
